Teresa West Smith death obituary Tennessee, United States — Associate Professor of English at Walters State Community College passes away unexpectedly
The community of Tennessee is mourning the unexpected passing of Teresa West Smith, 53, a devoted educator, beloved family woman, and longtime Associate Professor of English at Walters State Community College. Teresa passed away on the morning of June 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and unwavering love for others.
Teresa was a cherished wife, mother, “Mimi,” sister, aunt, and friend whose life was defined by compassion and selflessness. Known for always putting others before herself, she carried a true servant’s heart that touched countless lives both personally and professionally.
For 29 years, Teresa dedicated herself to education at Walters State Community College, where she inspired generations of students through her passion for English and her genuine care for their success. Beyond the classroom, she was deeply committed to mentoring college students alongside her husband, Hank, over the past five years—treating them with the same love and encouragement she gave her own family.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. A devoted member of Hillcrest Baptist Church for two decades, Teresa actively served her community and lived out her beliefs daily. Her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me,” reflected the strength and grace with which she lived.
In 2016, Teresa was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease. Despite the challenges, she faced her journey with courage and faith. In 2025, she publicly shared her need for a kidney transplant and was deeply moved by the overwhelming support from those willing to become donors. Her family continues to encourage others to consider organ donation, noting the thousands still waiting for life-saving transplants across the United States.
Teresa was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Frank and Eva West, and her father-in-law, Carl Smith.
She is lovingly survived by her husband of 35 years, Hank Smith; her sons Casey (Moriah) and Aaron (fiancée Abbey Butler); and her treasured granddaughters, Adley and Hallie. She is also survived by her brothers Sammy (Fleeta) West, Mike (Marsha) West, and Terry West; her brother-in-law Chuck (Teresa Murph) Smith; niece Christina West; and her special cousin Donna (Don) Calfee.
Friends and family will gather to honor Teresa’s life on Friday, June 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church, with funeral services to follow. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 6 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Teresa’s memory to the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation.
Teresa West Smith will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her faith, her kindness, and the countless lives she touched through her love and service.
